Statue for Bulgakov

The saga with regard to a statue for Mikhail Bulgakov in Moscow goes from one surprising turn to another. In our news archive you can find a series of announcements of initiatives and decisions to build a monument in honour of Bulgakov and The Master and Margarita in Moscow. First at the Patriarch’s pond, then again at the intersection of the Spiridonevsky street and Bolshoy Kozikhinsky Avenue at the Bulgakov Square, then again at the Patriarch’s pond... Often, these initiatives had to face opposition by local residents or unwillingness of the city council.

Last week, the Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin signed a decision to establish a statue in 2018 «between the houses 35 and 37 of the Big Pirogov Street». From August 1927 to February 1934, Bulgakov himself lived in number 35A. It is located outside the center, 5 km south of the Patriarch’s pond, near the so-called Third Ring Road.

The realisation of the monument was entrusted to sculptor Georgy Frangulyan (°1945), who is known inter alia by his statue of the Russian bard Bulat Okudzhava on the Arbat. In an interview with the TASS press agency, Frangulyan said that the bronze image is ready and that it is kept in a secret place until it will be placed next to the former residence of Bulgakov  «at the end of May or the beginning of the summer».

The design and construction of the monument will be borne by the International Charity Fund P. Tchaikovsky. The work on the square and the maintenance afterwards will be financed by the city government.
